A member of the House of Bjelbo in Sweden. He was a “jarl” and ruler of Sweden for nearly two decades in the 1200s. In 1252, he founded Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.
Son of Magnus Minnesköld and Ingrid Ylva. First marriage to Ingeborg Eriksdotter, sister to the ruling Swedish king, with whom he had at least eight children (including Erik Birgersson who was buried near him). Second marriage to Mechtild of Holstein, widow of the Danish king.
