Kaspar Hauser, the rumoured Prince of Baden

Kaspar Hauser was a German youth who gained fame when he appeared on the streets in 1828 and claimed to have been raised in total isolation in a small dark cell. His origins are unknown and he was apparently assassinated just five years after his dramatic discovery.

There was a long-standing belief that Hauser was of princely parentage and possibly the Prince of Baden, a son of the Grand Duke Carl von Baden and Stephanie de Beauharnais, Grand Duchess of Baden.

His mtDNA profile was determined by analysis of his bloodstained clothing during a study to disprove the legend that he was the Prince of Baden.
