Son of Robert James (a commercial hemp farmer and Baptist minister) and Zeralda Cole. Siblings include Frank James (another outlaw and gang member) and Susan James. Married his first cousin, Zeralda Mimms, and had two children who survived to adulthood.
mtDNA HVR1 haplotype determined from DNA analysis of hair and teeth samples collected from his original burial site (on the James farm) and his reburial site (at Mt Olivet Cemetery). This mtDNA profile was confirmed by mtDNA analysis of two maternal descendants of his sister.
