Francis Joseph van Zandt was a merchant marine who died in a plane crash in Alaska, 1948. His mummified arm and hand were discovered 51 years later and identified using improved fingerprinting and DNA technologies in 2008.
Francis Joseph van Zandt was born in Roanoke, Virginia. He died at 36 years of age, while returning home after a mission on an oil tanker.
DNA testing of his mummified arm and hand determined his mtDNA profile and partial Y-DNA STR profile. These DNA profiles were confirmed by the analysis of living maternal and paternal descendants.
