Alleged profile of Dorota Kochanowski, wife of famous Polish poet, Jan Kochanowski

Dorota Kochanowski (née Podlodowska) was married to the famous Polish poet, Jan Kochanowski. Jan wrote several hundred compositions in Polish and Latin served as the royal secretary to King Sigismund II Augustus.

Jan and Dorota married in 1575. They had seven children, three of whom died in infancy.

Dorota’s putative mtDNA profile was determined by DNA testing of a skull removed from the family tomb by a historian in 1791. This skull was long thought to belong to Jan, but genetic analyses in 2011 confirmed it to be a female skull, and hence predicted to belong instead to Dorota. Future analyses will need to be conducted to confirm the identity of this skull.
